In 2018, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine released the report Environmental Chemicals, the Human Microbiome, and Health Risk: A Research Strategy, which proposed a research strategy to advance understanding of the interactions between environmental chemicals and the human microbiome and the implications of those interactions on human health risk. The research strategy focused on three broad topics: (1) the effects of environmental chemicals on the human microbiome, (2) the role of the human microbiome in modulating environmental-chemical exposure, and (3) the importance of microbiome variation. This forum provides an opportunity to discuss some of the exciting research that has been published since the report's release and consider ways to advance research that can help us understand the importance of the human microbiome as a contributor to human health risks associated with environmental-chemical exposures.
