Webinar on New Interim Report: A Proposed Framework for Identifying Potential Biodefense Vulnerabilities Posed by Synthetic BiologyBoard on Chemical Sciences and Technology
August 22, 2017
Synthetic biology and related biotechnologies hold great promise for addressing challenges in human health, agriculture, and other realms. At the same time, synthetic biology raises concerns about possible malicious uses that might threaten human health or national security. This interim report is the first phase of a study by the National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine to assess potential vulnerabilities. The report proposes a strategic framework that can be used to identify and prioritize potential areas of concern. The final report (Phase 2) will apply the framework to current and anticipated uses of synthetic biology.
