Workshop Report/Summary

As antibiotic resistance emerges as an increasingly serious public health threat, needs are growing for new antibiotics that can overcome or bypass resistance to existing therapies. However, researchers face a number of technological challenges, including discovery of new antibiotic compounds, identifying new drug targets, and developing methods for delivering the drugs to sites of infection in the body.

A recent Chemical Sciences Roundtable workshop brought together experts from industry, government, and academia to discuss the issues associated with antibiotic development. As well as exploring the technological challenges and approaches that could overcome them, the workshop also included discussions about possible future endeavors to support the development of the next generation of antimicrobial compounds.
