 | Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle: Seventh Revised Edition: Update 2000 (2000)
This report takes the reader into the 21st century and the age of computer modeling to predict animal nutrient requirements. Computer models are proving to be an effective way to describe the dynamic state of animal nutrient requirements, taking into account animal, environmental, and feed ingredient variation. The report considers current issues in beef cattle production and their effects on prediction of nutrient requirements. For instance, with current emphasis on product quality and trend toward carcasses containing more lean and less fat, users of this report with its computer model should be able to define nutrient requirements for feeding cattle to different levels of fatness more precisely than has been possible with previous editions of this report. Another issue addressed in this revision is the environmental impact of feeding beef cattle. With the use of computer modeling to predict nutrient requirements, nutrient management is improved through refined animal feeding, which results in less overfeeding of nutrients, increased efficiency of nutrient utilization, maximized performance, and reduced excess nutrient excretion into the environment.
