Provisional Committee Membership Announced
November 2008--The provisional
membership of the Committee on America's Climate Choices has been approved and posted for public comment. The committee was selected on the basis of the expertise and experience needed to provide credible, action-oriented, and policy-relevant advice on responding to climate change. The committee is responsible for coordinating and providing direction for the America's Climate Choices suite of activities, which includes a major Summit and four study panels, and writing a final report.
Dr. Albert Carnesale, Chancellor Emeritus of the University of California, Los Angeles will serve as Chair of the Committee on America's Climate Choices. Carnesale brings a unique perspective and broad expertise on public policy issues that have substantial scientific or technological dimensions. He has author of many books and articles on subjects ranging from national security strategy to domestic and international energy issues. Dr. William Chameides, Dean of the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University, will serve as Vice Chair of the main committee. His 30-plus year career as a professor and researcher has focused on the atmospheric sciences and the causes of and remedies for global, regional, and urban environmental change.
Nothing is more important to the ultimate success of a National Academies study than the selection of members with the appropriate expertise, both individually and as a collective whole, to address the study task. For this study, a special effort was made to elicit nominations from all levels of government, from industry, and from academia and to represent a variety of geographic regions, industry sectors, and institutions. More than 1,000 names were submitted in response to a call for nominations of potential members to serve on the America's Climate Choices suite of activities.
In accordance with National Academies procedures and the requirements of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, committee appointments will become official after the 20-day public comment period has ended and all comments have been considered. To submit a comment, go to the
Current Projects System.
Provisional slates for each of the four study panels will be announced in the coming weeks.
