Report CoverExisting and Potential Standoff Explosives Detection Techniques (2004)

The ability to explosives at a standoff distance, for instance in cases involving suicide bombers on foot or in a vehicle, is a daunting but vital need. This report examines existing and potential technologies that offer new methods to detect explosives and/or image bombs at standoff distances. The report identifies several promising methods for standoff explosives detection including terahertz and microwave imaging and spectroscopy, and X-ray backscattering. It also recommends detection by exploiting physiological changes to an individual carrying concealed explosive. The report will be available shortly from NAP.
