| Letter Report on the Development of a Model for Ranking FDA Product Categories on the Basis of Health Risks (2009) The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is responsible for ensuring the safety, efficacy, and security of the many food and health products that fall under its purview. To help decision-makers evaluate the diverse array of product categories, FDA and the Department of Health and Human Services asked the National Research Council to convene a committee to develop and apply an evidence-based conceptual model for ranking product categories based on potential health consequences. The committee will continue to refine the model and will issue a final report later in 2009 that will include recommendations for using the risk-ranking model to help inform FDA's decision-making process.
