Understanding Interventions that Encourage Minorities to Pursue Research Careers:
Major Questions and Appropriate Methods
REGISTRATION AND LOGISTICAL INFORMATION
Who Should Attend
The workshop will be of interest to those interested in the effectiveness of
interventions aimed at increasing the participation of underrepresented
minorities in the biomedical and behavioral sciences.
It will be of particular interest to grantees and applicants of the RFA on the
"Efficacy of Interventions to Promote Research Careers"
(RFA-GM-05-009),
those who have submitted applications in response to the current RFA
(RFA-GM-07-005),
and prospective applicants for this program.
The workshop will also be of interest to others with responsibilities or research interests
in the participation of underrepresented minorities in biomedical and behavioral sciences
research, undergraduate research programs, and other related topics. Program directors
and others associated with MORE Division programs are especially encouraged to participate.
Because study of these issues is inherently interdisciplinary, institutions are
encouraged to consider the participation of individuals from a variety of disciplines:

Schedule - Updated
The workshop is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. EDT with registration available
at 8:00 a.m. EDT on Thursday, May 3, 2007. A full day of plenary sessions and
discussions will include a keynote address from
Dr. Elias A. Zerhouni,
Director of the National Institutes of Health, perspectives on these issues from
a variety of disciplines, the current state of knowledge and technical assistance.
Lunch will be provided at the meeting location.
There will be a reception for informal discussion at the end of the day, sponsored by
the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
The workshop will reconvene for breakout discussions at 8:00 a.m. EDT on Friday, May 4
(a light breakfast will be available). After reporting back on research questions and
approaches, there will be a panel discussion on next steps and facilitating advancement
in this area. The workshop will adjourn by 1:00 p.m.

The workshop has been moved to a larger venue in downtown Washington, D.C.,
to accommodate additional attendees. However, please be aware that we will probably not
be able to accommodate all who have expressed interest in attending.
The AAAS building is located in downtown Washington, D.C., at the intersection of
12th Street, H Street, and New York Avenue, NW, and one block from the
Metro Center station on the Red, Blue, and Orange Lines of Washington's
Metrorail system. Commercial parking lots are available within close proximity to the
AAAS building. You may wish to consult with your hotel about transportation to the
meeting location.
Workshop Cost
There is no cost to participate in the workshop, although participants
are asked to register in advance of the meeting.
Participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements and expenses.
A list of convenient hotels you may wish to consider has been provided
as a courtesy below.
Transportation
The Washington, D.C., area is served by three major airports. You may
wish to check all area airports for fares. Washington National Airport is
located closest to the meeting location and downtown Washington and may be
accessed by Metrorail subway. Amtrak service is available to Washington's
Union Station.
Hotel Accommodations - Updated
Workshop participants may wish to consider the following hotels, which are
located within walking distance of the meeting location. Although no
official rooming block or special rate has been established, each of
these hotels is commonly used by committee members and visitors to the
National Academies. We encourage you to make reservations as soon as
possible.
