Human activities such as fossil-fuel emissions and land-use changes have had major effects on atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide and methane, two of the most important greenhouse gases. Research on the global carbon cycle is needed to address remaining questions about the size and variability of carbon sources and sinks on land and in the oceans and atmosphere, which in turn, will help inform potential strategies for managing carbon in the environment. The National Research Council carries out a variety of studies, workshops, and meetings and publishes numerous reports on science-policy issues related to the global carbon cycle.
