Climate Variability & Change

All Topics >> This Topic's: Publications :: Meetings :: Ongoing Studies

Earth has always experienced climate variability on time scales ranging from seasonal-to-interannual to those occurring over hundreds to thousands of years. In the last century, human activities such as burning fossil fuels for energy and transportation and changes in land use also have resulted in significant changes in Earth's climate. Knowledge about natural climate variability and human-caused climate change is essential for improving projections of the climate, which in turn, is needed to help inform decisions about potential strategies for mitigation and adaptation to future climate change. The National Research Council carries out a variety of studies, workshops, and meetings and publishes numerous reports on science-policy issues related to climate variability and change.
