The geologic record, which includes fossils, sediment and ice cores, and tree rings, offers important insights on the variability of climate and other environmental systems throughout Earth's history. Earth processes such as erosion and volcanic eruptions alter the landscape and can cause short-term changes in the global climate. The use of earth resources, especially fossil fuels, has had a significant impact on the environment and climate through the generation of greenhouse gases and other pollutants. The National Research Council carries out a variety of studies, workshops, and meetings and publishes numerous reports on science-policy issues related to solid earth sciences and resources and global environmental change.
