Ecosystems supply many goods and services to society, including food, fiber, and clean air and water. Changes in the temperature, rainfall, water availability, cloud cover, and other climate variables affect Earth's ecosystems and biodiversity in many ways, such as shifts in ecosystem locations, alterations in the time of flowering and productivity, and changes in ice breakup on streams and rivers. Ecosystem changes, in turn, can lead to further variations in the climate system through their affects on greenhouse gases and other components of the atmosphere. Understanding the links among ecosystems and climate change and other environmental changes can lead to better management practices and the restoration of important ecosystem goods and services. The National Research Council carries out a variety of studies, workshops, and meetings and publishes numerous reports on science-policy issues related to ecosystems, biodiversity, and biogeochemistry. This 28-page booklet was developed based on Ecological Impacts of Climate Change (2009), a report by an independent panel of experts convened by the National Research Council. It explains general themes about the ecological consequences of climate change and identifies examples of ecological changes across the United States.
