Increasing accumulations of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere have increased attention on anthropogenic sources of greenhouse gas emissions and options for mitigating them. The transportation sector is a major producer of greenhouse gases. A variety of technologies and practices offer the potential to reduce the environmental impact of transportation by reducing the amount of energy required, developing more environmentally friendly fuels, and enhancing energy storage capabilities. The National Research Council carries out a variety of studies, workshops, and meetings and publishes numerous reports on science-policy issues related to environmental technology and transportation.
