Welcome to the web page of the National Research Council's Committee on Emerging Issues and Data on Environmental Contaminants. The activities of this committee have now been completed. This website will remain online to serve as a reference to the committee's activities and resource for the accompanying workshop summaries, presentations, and newsletters.
At the request of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the NRC created the Committee on Emerging Issues and Data on Environmental Contaminants in 2001 to facilitate communication among government, industry, environmental groups, and the academic community about emerging issues in toxicogenomics, environmental toxicology, risk assessment, exposure assessment, and other related fields.
Due to the rapid pace of advances in toxicogenomics, the committee focused most of its discussions on the scientific challenges, progress, and implications of toxicogenomic technologies, as well as the social, ethical, and legal issues that are involved. This web site provides links to the committee's meetings, newsletters, and workshop reports.
This committee's activities were overseen by the National Research Council's Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology and Board on Life Sciences. The National Research Council was organized by the National Academy of Sciences in 1916 to associate the broad community of science and technology with the Academy's purposes of furthering knowledge and advising the federal government. Functioning in accordance with general policies determined by the Academy, the Council has become the principal operating agency of both the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering in providing services to the government, the public, and the scientific and engineering communities.
