Update of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals:

The National Research Council invites you listen to the public briefing on the newly updated Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, an internationally accepted primary reference on the humane treatment of animals in research, testing, and teaching. Last updated in 1996, this new edition of the Guide integrates recently published data, scientific principles, and expert opinion to recommend practices for responsible laboratory animal use. Committee chair Janet Garber discusses new features of the Guide, including expanded coverage of the ethics of laboratory animal use; components of effective animal care and use Programs; and new guidelines for the housing, environment, and enrichment of terrestrial and aquatic animals, and for veterinary and clinical care.

A recording of the public briefing held on June 8, 2010 in Washington, DC is now available in mp3 format. Click here to download the file.

The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, also known as The Guide, is intended to assist IACUCs, researchers, and veterinarians in fulfilling their obligation to plan, conduct, and oversee animal experiments in accordance with the highest scientific, humane, and ethical principles. The Guide makes recommendations for humane animal care and use based on published data, scientific principles, expert opinion, and experience with methods and practices proven consistent with high-quality, humane animal care and use.

Written in general terms, the Guide emphasizes performance goals—not engineering approaches.
