Changes in the composition of Earth's atmosphere have caused regional and global changes in climate, air quality, and the Earth's protective layer of stratospheric ozone. The atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide play a major role in determining the global climate. Atmospheric aerosols also play an important role in changing the Earth's energy budget by influencing such factors as cloud formation and heat retention. The National Research Council carries out a variety of studies, workshops, and meetings and publishes numerous reports on science-policy issues related to the inter-related issues of atmospheric composition and air pollution.
