Increasing accumulations of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere have focused attention on anthropogenic sources of greenhouse gas emissions and options for mitigating them. The burning of fossil fuels to generate energy is by far the largest source of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. A broad range of energy technologies and practices, including those associated with energy efficiency and conservation, renewable energy, clean vehicles and alternative transportation fuels, clean coal, nuclear power, and other technologies can potentially contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while promoting economic growth, enhancing energy security, and reducing pollution. The National Research Council carries out a variety of studies, workshops, and meetings and publishes numerous reports on science-policy issues related to energy resources and use.
