Sustainable Development

All Topics >> This Topic's: Publications :: Meetings :: Ongoing Studies

Sustainable development has been defined by the United Nation's Brundtland Commission as "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Global environmental changes such as climate change and deforestation are the result of unsustainable patterns of development. Changes in climate, in turn, may pose challenges to future development through impacts on critical natural resources and the health and economic well-being of people, especially those in less developed and coastal regions of the world. The National Research Council carries out a variety of studies, workshops, and meetings and publishes numerous reports on science-policy issues related to sustainability.
