The publication of research articles involving animal studies is central to many disciplines in science and biomedicine, and should include adequate and specific information to enable the interpretation, evaluation, and reproducibility of the reported study. This report includes clear explanations, examples, and supporting references for the effective reporting of all major components of animal research, including aspects of animal care and use that can affect research outcomes.

ILAR announces the publication of the final version of the 8th Edition of The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, an internationally accepted primary reference on the humane treatment of animals in research, testing, and teaching. Last updated in 1996, this new edition of the Guide integrates recently published data, scientific principles, and expert opinion to recommend practices for responsible laboratory animal use. The final version can be purchased at the National Academy Press.

The ILAR Journal, the quarterly, peer-reviewed publication of the Institute for Laboratory Animal Research, provides thoughtful and timely information for all who use, care for, and oversee the use of laboratory animals.

This report focuses on pain experienced by animals used in research. It aims to educate laboratory animal veterinarians; students, researchers and investigators; Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee members; and animal care staff and animal welfare officers on the current scientific and ethical issues associated with pain in laboratory animals.
